Hi,Just a quick question.Do any of you who are on MTX and Hydroxy still take the stomach protector Omeprazole? I did take it when I was on Nsaids but as soon as I went over to MTX and Hydroxy the consultant said I needn't bother with the stomach protector.I'm now wondering if I was given the correct info as it was a different consultant I saw last time.In fact I've seen four different consultants, each giving me different advice.!! Brenda.

Hi Brenda
I may be wrong but I was told you only need stomache protectors if you take anti inflammatory

hello brenda I've not been told whether you continue or not, but actually I haven't asked the question either, I shall put it on my list for next consultant appointment. However, if I am feeling a bit icky (I am just on mtx and folic acid with the very occasional diclofenac) and I remember, I do take one. .....eve

I agree with Chrissie, it depends whether the mtx upsets your stomach or not. If it does, take the omeprazol.

I'm on mtx and hydroxy and did take omprazol but stopped because i was getting dodgy bowel problems and my GP thought they might be linked. First he tried different stomach protectore but eventually I stopped altogether mor than 6 months age and I have been fine. Try it and see what happens Good luck Sue

Hi, I'm on 20mg MTX and take NSAIDS and painkillers as & when needed. However, I take Omeprazole regularly - I was told that it doesn't really work properly if you just take it for a day every now & then - and I've found that it makes MTX days much better. But then I did get acid reflux from time to time before I had RA so perhaps I need it anyway. P

Hi, I'm on 15mg of MTX and still on diclofenac which I've been told is why I MUST take the omeprazole. But before the diclofenac the MTX made me feel really sick, still does some weeks so the omeprazole helps with that as well. Always suffered with IBS and wheat in particular used to affect me. With the omeprazole I can enjoy cakes again, hurrah! I like this drug shame I'm on a diet! Sara x

Hi Brenda, I am on the same as you, MTX and Hydrox. My doctor said stomach protectors were not needed unless it was for strong pain killers. I was on it to begin with but when the pain killers stopped so did the Omep. If you can do without it do so as it is one less for the system to cope with. Take care Lorna x

Hi,Thank you all for your replies. When my own GP was on holiday another doctor at the surgery reccomended I take Omeprazole. However, saw my own GP today and he said there's no need to take it. Funny how one doctors advice varys from another.Same with consultants,I've seen four or five different ones and they all give me different advice regarding when to take the medications. My next appointment with a consultant is in Aug. and no doubt I will see a different one again. It's almost impossible to get an appointment with the one you last saw.Luckily I always have the same rheumy nurse so have more faith in her. Brenda.x
